1. What is PURINETHOL and what is it used for?

PURI-NETHOL contains a drug called mercaptopurine.

PURI-NETHOL is in the group of drugs that prevent cell proliferation by inhibiting nucleic acid (substances containing genetic information-DNA, RNA) synthesis in proliferating cells.

PURI-NETHOL comes in glass bottles containing 25 tablets.

PURI-NETHOL is used in the treatment of acute leukemia (sudden blood cancer).

PURI-NETHOL is also used to treat chronic granulocytic leukemia (a type of leukemia).

2.How to use PURINETHOL?
Instructions for proper use and dose/frequency of administration

The usual daily dose in adults and children is 2.5 mg/kg. However, the dose and duration of administration are dependent on the types and doses of other cancer drugs taken with PURI-NETHOL. The dose should be carefully adjusted for you. When administered at the same time as allopurinol, PURI-

If you use more PURINETHOL than you should

The first signs of overdose are nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite and diarrhea.

There is no known antidote/drug for overdose with PURI-NETHOL.

If you have used more than you should use from PURI-NETHOL, tell your doctor immediately or go to a hospital directly. Take the medicine box with you.

3. What are the possible side effects?

Like all medicines, there may be side effects in people who are sensitive to the substances contained in PURINETHOL.

If any of the following occur, stop using PURI-NETHOL and IMMEDIATELY inform your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency department:

• Hypersensitivity reactions

- skin rashes

- high body temperature

- joint pain

- percentage swelling

• Fever or signs of infection (sore throat, sores in the mouth or urinary problems)

Unexpected bruising and bleeding. These conditions mean that very little of a certain type of blood cell is produced.

If you suddenly feel bad.

• If you have yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)

• If you have diarrhea

• If you feel sick (nausea) or become sick (vomiting)

Talk to your doctor if you have any of the following side effects, which may also occur with this medicine:

• Decrease in the number of blood cells and platelets

4. Things to consider before using PURINETHOL
DO NOT USE PURINETHOL in the following conditions


If you are allergic to mercaptopurine or any of the other ingredients of PURI-NETHOL (see list of excipients).

USE PURINETHOL CAREFULLY in the following conditions


• If you have jaundice, a problem with your liver

• If you have an inherited thiopurine methyltransferase enzyme (TPMT) deficiency

• If you are planning to become pregnant

• If you are going to get vaccinated - because some vaccines (polio, measles, mumps, rubella) while using PURI-NETHOL can cause you infection-
